‘Safe House #1’ for Ex-Muslim Atheists was launched in Nigeria by Humanist Global Charity

Many Muslims are abandoning their faith. Becoming an apostate is perilous; the penalty in 13 nations is death. Publicly leaving Islam for atheism is doubly-dangerous, atheists have been murdered or executed in Bangladesh, India, and Saudi Arabia, and Pew Research reports ‘unaffiliated people face harassment in 23 nations.” Asylum in a tolerant nation is desperately needed, but entry to the West is increasingly difficult. What can be done?  

A ‘Safe House’ for Ex-Muslim atheists was created in Nigeria – a nation divided between Christians and Muslims with arguably the worst religious violence in the world. In the last decade, the Muslim extremist Boko Haram killed more than 27,000 people and displaced 130,000. In recent months, thousands of tortured and raped prisoners have been rescued from Islamic ‘rehabilitation centers’ – where they were punished for ‘sins’ and disinterest in Islam. 

Humanist Global Charity is the first USA nonprofit to set up a Safe House for Ex-Muslims.

We raised $10,000 from October 21-December 1, 2019. It was spent renting 2-bedroom flats (for a year), with additional funds available for appliances, furniture, and food. The location and the names of the residents are secret.

 The Ex-Muslim Safe House might receive additional help from other secular-promoting nonprofits, like Atheist Alliance International, Center for Inquiry, Freedom From Religion Foundation, and Humanists International.
